Killer should've been deported years ago As Southwest Florida mourns the loss of fallen Fort Myers Police Officer Andrew Widman, we uncovered new information about his killer - Abel Arango. NBC2 found out that not only should Arango have been in jail, he shouldn't have been in the country at all. NBC2 spoke with Chief Charlie Ferrante, of the Lee County Sheriff's Office and we asked him if it is fair to say the criminal justice system failed Officer Widman. Ferrante responded, "I think the system doesn't pan out to everyone's liking, but there is a system and you have to respect it." Arango committed 20 felonies in the U.S. after landing in Miami as a Cuban refugee. Many of the alleged crimes happened in Collier County starting in 1998. In mid-May, deputies with the Lee County Sheriff's Office arrested Arango for selling cocaine, but he was released the next day. "The warrant for his violation for probation did not come until after our charges," said Chief Ferrante.
